In 1682, Lord Baltimore granted Fenwick Island to Thomas Fenwick, a wealthy York planter. In the 1880’s, people came to Fenwick Island for religious meetings and services. As Fenwick Islanders became land owners in 1941 as a result of the government requiring them to purchase their land, Islanders paid anywhere from $50 to $250 for a lot. Simple cottages sprang up as people put down roots. In many cases, the subsequent generations of these families who made a life and a living with the businesses that they started are still here today. One of those businesses is Warren’s Station, a family restaurant that is still open every summer. One of Fenwick Island’s best restaurants is Nantucket’s, which sits where the Fenwick Sub Shop used to be back in 1959.

If you are a lighthouse enthusiast, be sure to check out the more than 150-year-old Fenwick Island lighthouse. The current care of the lighthouse is under the direction of The New Friends of the Fenwick Island Lighthouse. For more information about the lighthouse, visit www.fenwickislandlighthouse.org.

Today, the town offers the same charm, containing no high-rise buildings and miles of clean beaches. Fenwick Island remains the one beach where a resident or vacation renter can obtain a permit and have a bonfire. For more information, visit www.fenwickisland.delaware.gov. Nearby Fenwick Island State Park offers 344 acres of peaceful ocean and bay shoreline. The white sand beaches are perfect for swimming and sunbathing. The swimming beach is guarded daily from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. There is also a designated surfing area and areas for surf fishing. With the proper permit, vehicles are permitted on the fishing beaches. For additional information, visit http://www.destateparks.com/park/fenwick-island/index.asp.

Homes in Fenwick Island are my specialty. As the Project Developer/Coordinator of communities such as King’s Grant, Water’s Edge, and The Curves, I am intricately familiar with the construction and design of these homes. All of these communities offer unparalleled views and access to some of the most pristine waters on the Delmarva coast.

King’s Grant

The community of King’s Grant offers both oceanfront and bay front townhomes, ideally located on both sides of Coastal Highway just outside of South Bethany and north of Fenwick Island. It is a peaceful setting that is just a few miles from the bustling area of Ocean City but perfectly positioned between all that both Maryland and Delaware seashore towns have to offer. These homes have lovely balconies to enjoy the views, giving an ideal place to relax with your morning cup of coffee or to catch some rays while reading your favorite novel.

On the oceanside, enjoy spectacular and inspiring sunrises. On the bayside, be sure to enjoy the stunning sunsets with their dazzling display of fuchsia, mango, and violet as they shimmer over the back bays. These bright and contemporary homes offer 3 bedrooms and a minimum of 2.5 bathrooms. Some units have a loft area and a fireplace. Amenities include an outdoor community pool, convenient walkways to the beach, and a private pier on the bay. In 2011, King’s Grant underwent an extensive $4.5 million exterior renovation, including new siding, decking, and roofing. Nearby activities include golf, tennis, boating, fishing, watersports, shopping, restaurants, and more.

Water’s Edge

Water’s Edge is located on Route 1 between Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island, across from the Delaware State Park. From sunrise to sunset, you can relax as you take in the views of both the ocean and the bay. This beautiful community of just 17 townhomes is nestled between King’s Grant and Maisons-Sur-Mer and overlooks Delaware’s beautiful State Park lands. It is situated on eighteen acres of prime, lush waterfront property on the Assawoman Bay and is directly across from the dunes and the cool blue waters of the ocean.

Water’s Edge townhomes offer 3 floors of living space with additional ground floor covered parking, storage, and outdoor shower. All levels of the homes offer decking to enjoy the outdoor vistas. Interior features include 9-foot ceilings, a great room, large dining room and kitchen, 3 bedrooms on the first floor, and an entire master suite encompassing the second floor.

The Curves

The Curves is an exclusive area of just 6 homesites, located on a private stretch of beach with its own dune crossing, just 2 miles south of Bethany Beach.
